We saw just four Premier League fixtures this weekend but it was still one to remember.
Our Player of the Week is …
Arsenal’s season so far has been full of ups and downs.
A nightmare start to the campaign prompted premature talk of a relegation battle, only for Mikel Arteta’s side to find some form in September and October.
There were setbacks again in November and December, while a disciplinary matter off the pitch saw Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang stripped of the captaincy last week.
But at the time of writing the Gunners are on a three-match winning streak which has seen them rise to fourth in the table and they’ve only won one match fewer than Chelsea this season.
So it’s not been a bad season at all so far and the good news is, this is a burgeoning side spearheaded by some of the most promising young players in Europe.
The likes of Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith-Rowe, Aaron Ramsdale and Gabriel Magalhães have all impressed this term but on Saturday, Gabriel Martinelli was the star of the show as Arteta’s young guns ran riot at Elland Road.
Martinelli is still only 20 but it feels like he’s been around for a long time and were it not for injury issues, we probably would have seen a lot more performances like this one over the last couple of seasons.
Hopefully he can really kick on from here because this was a display which showcased exactly what he is all about.
His first goal was a proper striker’s finish while his second was speed, strength and composure capped off with a delightful dink over the onrushing goalkeeper.
Brazilian legend Ronaldinho once compared Martinelli to Ronaldo but these two goals also had echoes of Thierry Henry, and the youngster has written his name into Arsenal’s history books by scoring the club’s 7,000th goal.
There are bound to be more bumps in the road for Arsenal and who knows where they will finish this season. But while the present is bright, the future is even brighter.
