The Premier League announcing that all 20 clubs have agreed a £30 maximum price on all away tickets at PL matches next season.

This makes it a full decade that this £30 away ticket price cap has been in place.

Whilst of course keeping any ticket prices down is welcome, it does beg the question as to why the Premier League clubs can’t agree a price cap on all tickets, home and away?

There has never been more money flowing into the top tier of English football and yet Newcastle United and their rivals have continued to increase ticket prices in recent years.

The reality of course is that the away ticket price cap was brought in for one reason only.

The money generated from overseas TV deals continues to be a big growth area in terms of revenue, far more so than the domestic rights deals for the UK. A key reason for why English football is so popular with overseas audiences is due to the atmospheres generated by having thousands of away fans at matches.

With ticket prices ever rising, that is why the decision was made ten years ago to agree a cap on all away tickets for all Premier League clubs, because for sure the prices away fans would have ended up having to pay would for sure have reduced numbers travelling and hence, reduced atmospheres showing through TV screens around the world. You just need to look at prices charged by the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Fulham for their own fans, to see why ticket sales for many away clubs would have been seriously affected, if having to pay the same as home fans.

Premier League official announcement – 3 June 2025:

‘Premier League clubs today unanimously agreed to extend the current £30 cap on away ticket prices.

This will be the 10th season the £30 cap has been in place. Since its introduction in 2016, attendance at away games has increased from 82 per cent to 91 per cent.

The Premier League and clubs recognise the additional costs associated with fans following their team during the season, and the incredible atmospheres they create at matches.

A Fan Engagement Standard was launched in 2023 to reinforce Premier League clubs’ commitment to ensuring long-term meaningful engagement with supporters.
