Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden is “looking likely to take over” from the role vacated by David Silva in the City squad, says Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson.

The quotes, reported by FourFourTwo, come ahead of the Sunday evening fixture between Hodgson’s side and City in the Premier League.

Foden (20) scored the only goal of the game last Wednesday against Brighton to land his side the three points – a feat which also saw the youngster become City’s top scorer this season, with 8 goals.

Hodgson spoke highly of how Pep Guardiola has managed Foden and patiently introduced him into the first-team – a patience which has not always been shared by many City fans, who have wanted to see Foden start more regularly.

“He has been very well managed by the club and had been integrated into the first-team in a very clever way, a very sensible way,” Hodgson said.

“Of course you can do that when you have so many other good players around you – you can afford to leave a player of his quality out because you have got other fantastic players in your squad.

“I think they have done it very well, he has obviously worked very hard at his game and has got better, as everyone knew he would with Premier League and Champions League experience”, the ex-England manager added.

The quotes that will please Foden the most, however, will surely be the comparison to club legend David Silva. Hodgson stated: “Now he is in the international set-up he is going to get better and better, it is fantastic really that after losing a player of David Silva’s quality, who really lit the league up over a long period of time, they have now managed to find another player from their own ranks who is looking likely to take over that mantle.”

Unfortunately for Hodgson, in spite of his kind words, he now has to come up with a plan to stop Foden and co. on Sunday as City aim to keep up their resurgent form and push for the title.
