The Premier League will be granted an additional place in next season’s Champions League due to England’s co-efficient ranking.
UEFA allocate two additional places in the Champions League to the two countries with the best-performing clubs in Europe the previous season. England lead the current co-efficient standings, ahead of Spain in second and Italy in third.
The Premier League still has five clubs remaining in Europe this season, with Arsenal, Aston Villa (both Champions League), Manchester United, Tottenham (both Europa League) and Chelsea (Europa Conference League) all involved in European quarter-finals.
Italy had been the only nation capable of overhauling England in the co-efficient ranking and still have three sides left in Europe. However, Arsenal’s win over Real Madrid on Tuesday night means that Serie A can no longer overhaul the Premier League for an additional Champions League place.
Even if Inter Milan, Lazio and Fiorentina win the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League respectively, it will not be enough to overtake England, regardless of the Premier League side’s results from here.
England’s additional place in next season’s Champions League is a huge boost to the clubs chasing qualification. Newcastle United are currently fifth and would benefit from the co-efficient place as things stand. However, there are just six points between fourth-placed Chelsea and Brighton in ninth in a competitive race to finish in the top five.
England could still be allocated more teams in the Champions League. Spurs or Manchester United could yet qualify if either side wins the Europa League this season, despite finding themselves in the Premier League’s bottom half.
Aston Villa, meanwhile, are seventh in the Premier League table but could still win the Champions League this season, thus earning entry into next season’s competition. No nation has previously had more than five entrants in a single season.
