More disruption to the Premier League schedule is expected as the date for King Charles III’s coronation has been set.

The death of Queen Elizabeth II last month led to the postponements of several games across the country. All football was suspended for a weekend as a mark of respect to the monarch.

The following week, the Queen’s funeral took place. With thousands of people flocking to London to attend, a large police presence was required. Subsequently, the planned fixtures of Chelsea vs Liverpool, Manchester United vs Leeds United, and Brighton and Hove Albion vs Crystal Palace were called off.

The Premier League fixture list is already more crammed than usual, with the World Cup taking place in November and December. Furthermore, there could be serious scheduling conflicts if England sides progress deep into European competitions.

And there could be more problems on the way. As reported by The Guardian, the coronation of King Charles III will take place on Saturday, May 6, 2023.

Once again, the event will need a heavy police attendance to manage the huge crowds. Therefore, matches between rivals are the ones most likely to be postponed.

Ten Premier League games are currently planned for May 6 – although some will be moved for TV. Over that weekend, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa clash in a West Midlands Derby, while London clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace also face off.

That same weekend is also scheduled to hold the final round of fixtures in the Championship, League One, and League Two. This could cause further trouble, with emotions running high from potential promotion and relegation scenarios.
