Premier League final day permutations: What could happen? | OneFootball

The final day of the Premier League season is upon us, with plenty still to play for.

This season’s champions are still yet to be decided, with both Manchester City and Arsenal competing for the trophy.

There are also European places up for grabs on the final day. Here are all the permutations of what could happen…

Premier League title

If Manchester City beat West Ham at home, they will be crowned Premier League champions for the fourth time in a row, a feat which has never been done before.

But if they drop points to the Hammers, it opens the door for the Gunners to secure the title, who need to beat Everton at home and need City to drop points for that to happen. Their superior goal difference means a City draw and Gunners win would be enough.

Race for Europe

The top four places have already been decided but it is still all to play for when it comes to Europa League and Conference League qualification.

A draw for fifth-placed Tottenham at already relegated Sheffield United is enough to guarantee Europa League football next season, and they are already certain to at least finish sixth whatever happens.

Sixth place currently means Conference League qualification, but Man City winning the FA Cup would mean an extra Europa League spot goes to the Premier League, so sixth would get Europa League and seventh would be entered into the Conference League.

For Chelsea, a draw at home against Bournemouth would secure sixth. But if they beat Bournemouth and Spurs lose to Sheffield United, Mauricio Pochettino’s side would clinch fifth.

Newcastle also have hopes of securing a second consecutive season of European football. To finish sixth, they must win at Brentford and hope Chelsea lose to Bournemouth. Finishing seventh above Manchester United may still be enough to get into the Conference League though.

Manchester United could still qualify for Europe through the FA Cup by beating rivals Man City, which would earn them a Europa League place. But to get into Europe via the league, they need to better Newcastle’s result to get seventh, which would guarantee them at least a Conference League spot.

A win at Wembley would then leapfrog them into the Europa League instead. But defeat to Brighton and in the FA Cup final would see them miss out on Europe entirely.

Relegation fight

Luton Town need a miracle to stay up, given that they are three points behind Nottingham Forest and are 12 goals worse off when it comes to goal difference.
