The Premier League have confirmed their match official appointments for the upcoming round of fixtures, including Arsenal’s trip to Newcastle United.

Arsenal fans will be interested to learn which officials have been appointed to their match against Newcastle United this weekend, after some controversial decisions in recent fixtures between the two sides.

Arsenal were hugely frustrated by Newcastle’s timewasting at the Emirates Stadium last season, and they believed they should have had a penalty or two in the 0-0 draw.

The Gunners then travelled to St. James’ Park and achieved a 2-0 win, thanks in part to VAR correctly ruling that Jakub Kiwior hadn’t committed a handball offence for a Newcastle penalty.

The Premier League have confirmed Stuart Attwell as this weekend’s referee, assisted by Richard West and James Mainwaring.

Graham Scott will act as the fourth official, with Andy Madley on VAR duties and Stuart Burt as the assistant VAR.

Arsenal have a marginally positive record in games refereed by Attwell, with nine wins, six draws, and five defeats. Though it’s noteworthy he’s only given Arsenal one penalty and awarded zero red cards to the opposition in the last decade.

In particular, Gunners fans were fuming after Attwell’s refereeing display on New Year’s Day in 2022, when he denied Arsenal a clear penalty against Manchester City, sent off Gabriel Magalhaes, and awarded City a penalty of their own.

On the other hand, Newcastle’s record with Attwell is similar, with 14 wins, four draws, and nine defeats.

And in matches between the two sides with Attwell refereeing, Arsenal have won on both occasions, 1-0 and 2-0 at home in 2017/18 and 2021/22.
