Premier League clubs spent £2.36 billion in the 2023 summer transfer window, setting a new record. January hasn’t been as busy.

While January windows are usually quiet, there’s a feeling that clubs are scared to make moves. With Everton being docked points and threatened with more, alongside Nottingham Forest, clubs have to be absolutely certain they can afford any new arrivals.

In July, Declan Rice’s £105m move to Arsenal became the most expensive transfer from one Premier League side to another in the competition’s history, until Chelsea broke the record once again by finally bringing Moises Caicedo to Stamford Bridge from Brighton. It was a throwback to a few years ago when Liverpool’s world-record fee for a goalkeeper in Alisson lasted just a few days before Chelsea signed Kepa Arrizabalaga.

It looks to have been money well spent, as the former West Ham man seems to have taken the Gunners to the next level as they fight Man City once again for the Premier League title.

Rice’s former side West Ham took their time but ultimately spent some of their windfall on midfield reinforcements, adding Ajax’s Edson Alvarez, who can also play centre-back and set-piece specialist James Ward-Prowse who, after joining Southampton as a youngster, has finally moved on. Mohammed Kudus also arrived for around £40m and has been a revelation, becoming the first player to complete 100+ take-ons in the Premier League in 2023/24.

In January, the total spending of all 20 Premier League clubs hasn’t even reached £100m. Tottenham were the biggest spenders, parting with £25m to bring Radu Dragusin to the club from Genoa, although he will disappointed at his lack of playing time. At the same time, Eric Dier went out on loan. And that has been the story of the window, while there have been a fair few departure, a lot of them have been temporary. Sergio Reguilon, for example, ended his loan with Manchester United only to join Brentford until the end of the season, while Kalvin Phillips has endured a terrible time at West Ham, after signing on loan from champions Manchester City.

Adam Wharton, one of the only £15+ million deals during the winter window, has excelled at Crystal Palace after his move from Blackburn, with calls even being made for an England call up in the not too distant future.
