Chairman Gary Hoffman has resigned from his position with the Premier League, it has been announced.
Despite only taking the position in April 2020, his tenure at the helm has proven short-lived.
As a result of friction with some Premier League clubs, Hoffman has now stepped down after negotiating his exit.
According to The Athletic, the league’s sanctioning of Newcastle’s takeover from a Saudi Arabian-backed investment fund caused great resentment towards Hoffman.
In a statement released through the Premier League, Hoffman said: “It has been a privilege to lead the Premier League through the last two seasons – where the spirit of English football has been more important than ever.
“Now, I have decided the time is right for me to stand aside to allow new leadership to steer the League through its next exciting phase.”
In addition, the European Super League drama is also reported to be a point of contention for clubs, with the Newcastle situation being viewed as the culmination of a series of issues.
