The Premier League has confirmed that the Todd Boehly/Clearlake Consortium’s takeover of Chelsea has been approved.

Chelsea were put up for sale before owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned over his links to Russian president Vladimir Putin, and the Boehly-led consortium had a £4.25bn bid accepted for the club earlier this month.

And a statement released by the Premier League on Tuesday evening confirmed that the consortium has passed its owner’s and directors test.

“The purchase remains subject to the Government issuing the required sale licence and the satisfactory completion of the final stages of the transaction,” read the statement.

“The Board has applied the Premier League’s Owners’ and Directors’ Test (OADT) to all prospective Directors, and undertaken the necessary due diligence.

“The members of the Consortium purchasing the club are affiliates of the Clearlake Capital Group, L.P., Todd Boehly, Hansjorg Wyss and Mark Walter.

“Chelsea FC will now work with the relevant Governments to secure the necessary licences to complete the takeover.”

Boehly is the owner of the LA Dodgers baseball team and got his first taste of a match at Stamford Bridge when he was in attendance for the Blues’ recent 2-2 draw with Wolves.
