France U21 centre-forward Elye Wahi (21) is set to leave RC Lens after only one season with the Artois side, according to a report this Monday from L’Equipe. The 21-year-old has struggled to justify his €30m price tag this season with Franck Haise’s side. Wahi has logged 12 goals and four assists with the Ligue 1 outfit. The outlet understands that Lens and Wahi have reached an agreement for the latter to leave for pastures new this summer. Only Kylian Mbappé scored more Ligue 1 goals than him at such a young age. Wahi has reported suitors among Premier League and Bundesliga clubs.
L’Equipe understands that Elye Wahi will be the victim of the new sporting policy in play at Lens, whose owner Joseph Oughourlian is planning for a whopping €111m worth of player sales. In a press conference attended by L’Equipe, Oughourlian said he regretted breaking Lens’ transfer record for Elye Wahi, meaning there was hardly any way back for the centre-forward after that. “I have no regrets about the player but about the excessive amount of the transfer. It may have had an impact on him in the locker room. I don’t think I’ll see the club spending that same amount so soon.”
