The Copa America gets underway this evening in Brazil, after several changes were made to the tournament in the last few weeks.
We’ve seen a change of host and a change of the rules with unlimited subs now allowed, whilst the pandemic is still very much at large in the South American country.
Indeed, that poses a real issue to all the players, including our Liverpool trio of Fabinho, Alisson and Roberto Firmino, and club staff will be watching them closely over the coming month or so.
As per the Liverpool Echo, the issue also comes from the three players’ potential return date for the club.
The final of the Copa America is one day before Liverpool get pre-season underway on July 12th and, even if Brazil do not make that stage, they will surely go far in the tournament.
Clearly, there is a good chance the trio are going to miss a real portion of pre-season and we’ll just have to hope that when they do return they are fit and healthy, whenever that date proves to be.
ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT
It’s always nice to see Liverpool players representing their nations but this Copa America goes ahead with a lot of confusion and, frankly, sadness around it.
Brazil’s record in the pandemic has been shocking and yet they’re hosting the tournament after Argentina and Colombia stood down as hosts.
It’s a real muddle, and hopefully all the players, including ours, will return to their clubs safe and sound.
