Pre-Match Analysis: Borussia Dortmund need a miracle against Barcelona

I won’t sugarcoat it: Borussia Dortmund needs a miracle to advance to the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League. The Black and Yellows were thrashed 4-0 in the first leg, and utterly dominated in nearly every measurable statistic in the match. Even without the one-sided officiating, Borussia Dortmund was going to lose by multiple goals.

Yet here we are, faced with the home leg and no logical explanation for how Dortmund will win by four or more goals. I don’t know what Niko Kovač is going to do here, so instead of making bold predictions, I’m going to describe a few hopes.

My hope for this match, is that Niko Kovač allows some of his younger, more inexperienced players to start this quarterfinal leg in Europe’s biggest stage, and I hope that Hansi Flick does the same. On the best of days, I don’t think this Borussia Dortmund squad can overcome a 4-0 deficit to Flick’s Barcelona. It’s far more important to focus on winning as many remaining points in the Bundesliga as possible. Perhaps some of our best players need rest, and I hope they’re allowed just that.

Show me the young, eager players, who have something to prove. Keep reading for team news, hopeful lineups, and a few match predictions/hopes for this game:
