On Wednesday, an Instagram post by Thomas Müller caused a stir among football fans in Germany. In a staged video, the Bayern professional hinted at his participation in the European Championship. However, the DFB has denied this.
Officially nominated or just a joke? The video posted by Thomas Müller on his Instagram channel initially appeared to be a self-nomination for the European Championships. Several other national team players had previously been nominated in unusual ways. In the clip, Müller is shown in full DFB kit, skilfully juggling the ball in the empty Allianz Arena and finally shooting it skilfully into the net. He posted the video with the title „Kick it like Müller“ and the hashtags #allianzarena and #em2024. Several media outlets fell for the Müller prank and announced his official nomination.
The DFB denied Müller’s official nomination – the Bavarian prankster had published the video on his own initiative and allowed himself a little joke. In a later Instagram story, he enlightened his followers by writing: „Now all that’s missing for the perfect day is my real nomination“.
Despite the confusion, it remains clear that Müller has made an important impact since his return to the national team in September 2023. He put in strong performances in the games against France and the Netherlands in March and was used as a substitute in both cases. With 128 caps and 45 goals to date, Müller has had an impressive career with the national team. His return could also be crucial for the upcoming home European Championships.
Football fans will soon find out whether Thomas Müller will actually be part of the European Championship squad. The official squad announcement by national coach Julian Nagelsmann is scheduled for this Thursday (1pm). Müller himself will certainly be keen to open the European Championship with the German national team at home in the Allianz Arena.
