The 2021/22 season is under way pretty much everywhere except Italy so it’s time to reveal our first list of Europe’s top 10 most in-form teams of the new campaign.

Enough about Lionel Messi, Barcelona are still Barcelona.

The Blaugrana made a very solid start to the new season, with future president Gerard Piqué opening the scoring and Martin Braithwaite bagging a brace in what ended up being a 4-2 win over Real Sociedad.

Maybe there’s life after Messi after all.

9. VfB Stuttgart (🆕)

What a start to the new season. Stuttgart are top of the Bundesliga, outdoing Bayern (who drew their opener), Dortmund (who went on to lose the Supercup), and RB Leipzig (who suffered defeat at Mainz) on the first matchday of the new Bundesliga campaign.

Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side racked up a whopping 33 shots in a 5-1 hammering of newly promoted Greuther Fürth that they hope will set the tone for the rest of the season.

8. Real Madrid (🆕)

Carlo Ancelotti had a fine start to life back in the Real Madrid dugout, kicking things off with a 4-1 win over Alavés that leaves Los Blancos top of the table after the first round of fixtures.

It was definitely time to move on from Zinedine Zidane and while bringing back an old manager might not seem like the most progressive step, it could be just what’s needed for them right now.

7. Sporting CP (🆕)

The Portuguese champions have picked up where they left off last season with two wins, five goals scored and just one conceded, leaving them back on top of the Primeira Liga.

Back-to-back titles incoming?

6. Tottenham (🆕)

Well, who saw that coming? After weeks of chatter about Harry Kane and Manchester City, Spurs were without their talismanic striker but beat the champions anyway on Sunday evening.

Japhet Tanganga was the star of the show in defence while the three-pronged counter-attack of Heung-min Son, Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn was a sign of things to come under Nuno Espírito Santo.

5. Liverpool (🆕)

After the disappointment of last season, the Reds will be hoping to be back in the mix this term.

And, boosted by the return of Virgil van Dijk, they began the season with an authoritative at Norwich, with Mohamed Salah’s sharpness sending out a message to the rest of the league.

Underestimate them at your peril.

4. Paris Saint-Germain (🆕)

Having added Messi to their already frightening array of superstars, it’s hard to imagine PSG not winning the Ligue 1 title at the very least this season.

They started as they mean to go on with a 4-2 win over Strasbourg, in which forgotten men Mauro Icardi and Julian Draxler both scored.

Just imagine what they might do when Messi is added to this already potent cocktail.

What a start to the season!

Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick, Paul Pogba was unplayable, and a full house at Old Trafford witnessed one of the best performances of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side hammered Leeds 5-1.

Are the good times back for good? Let’s wait and see.

2. Angers (🆕)

The surprise result of the weekend in France saw Stéphane Moulin’s Angers stun Lyon with a brilliant 3-0 victory which leaves them top of Ligue 1 after matchday one.

It won’t last, of course, but keep playing like that and they could be mixing it with the big boys throughout the season.

1. Chelsea (🆕)

Things are looking good at Stamford Bridge.

Romelu Lukaku is back, they’ve added the Super Cup to the Champions League they won back at the end of last season and they began the new Premier League campaign with a very convincing win over Crystal Palace.

We are looking at very strong title contenders, make no mistake about it.
