The Europa League theme tune rang out around the Amex Stadium after Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City confirmed that Brighton had qualified for European football for the first time in their history.

Roberto De Zerbi has done a fantastic job since taking over from Graham Potter this season and his team have been a joy to watch. Here’s hoping they can keep the nucleus of that squad together over the summer.

9. West Ham (🆕)

Shocking hooliganism in the stands threatened to mar their Conference League semi-final with AZ Alkmaar last week, but thankfully it didn’t take the shine off the Hammers’ 1-0 victory, which sets up a date with Fiorentina in the final.

David Moyes’s side then followed it up with a 3-1 win over Leeds on Sunday which steered them further away from the Premier League relegation zone. All’s well that ends well.

8. Feyenoord (👎 Last week: 6)

After securing their title, the Dutch champions could have slipped into cruise control in the final weeks of the season, but instead, they picked up their 25th league win of the campaign with a dominant victory over FC Emmen at the weekend.

And the good news keeps coming, with coach Arne Slot confirming on Thursday that he won’t be leaving to join Tottenham this summer.

7. Benfica (🆕)

After coming from 2-0 down at half-time to draw 2-2 with Sporting in the Derby de Lisboa last weekend, Benfica are in pole position to lift the Primeira Liga title for the 38th time in their history.

A draw at home to Santa Clara on the final day of the season should be enough to seal it. Second-placed Porto (who are at home to VitĂłria SC) will be praying for a slip-up.

6. Newcastle (🆕)

How Newcastle didn’t score as they dominated relegation-threatened Leicester in the Premier League on Monday night is anybody’s guess.

But the 0-0 draw at St James’ Park was enough for the Magpies to seal Champions League qualification for the first time in 20 years, putting Eddie Howe in firm contention for the Premier League’s Manager of the Year award.

5. Lens (👍 Last week: 8)

A 3-1 victory over Lorient made it nine wins from their last 10 for Lens and put them on the brink of automatic qualification for the Champions League group stages.

At the very worst, Franck Haise’s side will enter Europe’s premier competition at the qualifying round next season. They are one of European football’s stories of the season.

4. RB Leipzig (No change)

Leipzig are making a habit of coming from behind to win and they did it again last weekend, pulling off a sensational 3-1 victory away at Bayern Munich which has blown the Bundesliga title race wide open.

It also confirmed Leipzig’s automatic qualification for next season’s Champions League. Great credit is due to coach Marco Rose.

3. Inter (👎 Last week: 2)

It has been a mixed week for the Nerazzurri.

After reaching the Champions League final, Simone Inzaghi’s side suffered a 3-1 defeat away to Serie A champions Napoli, which leaves their qualification for Europe’s premier competition in a bit of jeopardy heading into the final two league fixtures of the season.

But on Wednesday they put those troubles behind them as they came from behind to beat Fiorentina and lift the Coppa Italia for the second consecutive season, with the brilliant Lautaro MartĂnez bagging a brace on the night.

2. Borussia Dortmund (🆕)

That aforementioned win for Leipzig in Munich leaves Dortmund with an unexpected date with destiny this weekend.

BVB’s win away at Augsburg on Sunday means they now just need to beat Mainz at home on the final day of the season and they will be Bundesliga champions for the first time since 2011/12. Alternatively, a favour from Köln (who host Bayern) would deliver the Meisterschale to the Westfalenstadion.

No pressure!

1. Manchester City (No change)

Arsenal’s defeat at Nottingham Forest meant Manchester City were crowned Premier League champions for the third successive season and the fifth time in six years on Saturday.

It was party time at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, where Pep Guardiola’s side beat Chelsea before being held to a 1-1 draw away at Brighton on Wednesday night.

That was the first time City dropped points in the Premier League since 18 February, and their unbeaten run in all competitions now stands at 25 matches.

They are a juggernaut.
