We’re reaching the business end of the season and every result is beginning to feel weighty.
Here are our latest Power Rankings.
Things were looking pretty bleak for the Gunners when their top four hopes were dealt another blow with a defeat at Southampton last weekend.
But slip-ups from Tottenham and Manchester United combined with Wednesday’s Eddie Nketiah-inspired 4-2 win at Stamford Bridge have got Mikel Arteta’s side right back in contention.
They were already one of the feel-good stories of the Bundesliga season and on Tuesday night, Freiburg made history when they overcame Hamburger SV in the DFB-Pokal semi-final to book the first ever major final appearance in the club’s history.
It’s a tight-knit group of players assembled on a relatively small budget and coached by the charismatic Christian Streich. What’s not to love?
Since the heartbreak of their Champions League elimination at the hands of Real Madrid, PSG have won six matches in a row, scoring 22 goals and conceding just three.
They beat rivals Marseille at the weekend and Wednesday’s 3-0 victory over Angers puts them within touching distance of reclaiming the Ligue 1 title. It’s not all bad news, is it?
After their mini wobble a few weeks back, the Nerazzurri are firmly back on track with a thoroughly deserved 3-0 victory over rivals AC Milan on Tuesday setting up an enticing Coppa Italia final with Juventus.
What’s more, if Simone Inzaghi’s side win their game in hand they will leapfrog Milan at the top of the table would have to be considered favourites to retain the Scudetto.
We wrote in last week’s rankings that Porto were looking unstoppable having become the first Portuguese side ever to go 57 league fixtures unbeaten.
That number now stands at 58 thanks to a 7-0 demolition of Portimonense at the weekend, leaving them nine points clear of Sporting CP at the top of the Primeira Liga table.
While many were singing Unai Emery’s praises for unexpectedly guiding Villarreal to a Champions League semi-final next week, some pointed to the fact their 7th position in LaLiga suggests their season hasn’t all been sunshine and lollipops.
The Yellow Submarine are still 7th in the table at the time of writing, but back-to-back victories over Getafe and Valencia means they remain in the hunt for European football.
Since we last published our rankings, Leipzig have overcome Atalanta to book a date with Rangers in the Europa League semi-final, beaten Bayer Leverkusen to extend their unbeaten run in the Bundesliga to nine matches, and beaten Union Berlin in the DFB Pokal semi-finals.
Not a bad week’s work from Domenico Tedesco’s men.
City’s dreams of a historic treble were brought to a shuddering halt in an FA Cup semi-final defeat to Liverpool which was essentially over by half-time last weekend.
But it’s not all bad news for Pep Guardiola’s side, with Wednesday’s win over Brighton leaving them one point clear at the top of the Premier League table with six matches remaining this season.
A dramatic comeback to beat Sevilla including a stoppage time winner from Karim Benzema last Sunday followed by a 3-1 win at Osasuna in which Benzema missed two penalties on Wednesday means Los Blancos could be crowned LaLiga champions as early as this weekend if results go their way elsewhere.
Get that signed, sealed and delivered and they can focus all their efforts on chasing down a 14th Champions League.
People keep expecting this Liverpool side to stumble and people keep being proven wrong. That FA Cup victory over Manchester City means the impossible quadruple is still a very real possibility, and Jürgen Klopp’s side wiped the floor with a Manchester United side who couldn’t get near them at Anfield on Tuesday.
Sadio Mané is on fire, Thiago is balling out, and Mohamed Salah is back in the goals. A frightening prospect.
