Itâs time to update our list of the top 10 form teams in Europe this week.
Weâve got a five new entries in the Power Rankings but itâs bad news for Manchester City, who drop out after their first defeat of the season last weekend.
League matters made way for the Taça de Portugal at the weekend, where Benfica needed a penalty shoot-out to overcome fourth tier side Caldas SC. The important thing is that they got the job done though, and they will be hoping to extend their lead at the top of the Primeira Liga when they take on second-placed Porto on Friday night.
Crisis? What crisis? After that 7-1 win over Rangers in the Champions League gave the Reds a much-needed confidence boost, they have pulled off two hard-fought 1-0 victories over Manchester City and West Ham in the Premier League, making their title hopes suddenly seem a lot less forlorn.
We gave Club Brugge a shout-out for their Champions League form in last weekâs rankings but itâs another club who are dominating the Jupiler Pro League at the moment. Genkâs 6-1 win over Westerlo on Tuesday night was their sixth on the bounce, and it leaves them four points ahead of Antwerp at the top of the table.
A 0-0 draw for plucky Lorient at the weekend means they unfortunately drop out of the top 10, and PSG take their place. Despited reported unrest behind the scenes, the Ligue 1 champions pulled off a 1-0 victory in a bad tempered affair with rivals Marseille on Sunday to move three points clear at the top of the table.
Make that seven matches in charge of Chelsea for Graham Potter, and seven matches unbeaten. The Blues wonât have been completely satisfied with their 0-0 draw at Brentford on Wednesday night but they will be thrilled with the form of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who has been an unlikely hero with some incredible saves to keep five consecutive clean sheets in all competitions.
Re-entering the rankings after dropping out last week are the reigning Spanish and European champions. Los Blancos looked a class above rivals Barcelona in Sundayâs 3-1 ClĂĄsico victory before Karim Benzema celebrated his well deserved Ballon dâOr by netting in a 3-0 win over Elche on Wednesday.
Erik ten Hagâs summer departure from the Johan Cruijff ArenA has barely been felt with Alfred Schreuder picking up where the now-Manchester United boss left off. Ajaxâs 7-1 victory over Excelsior at the weekend leaves them top of the Eredivisie, just ahead of fellow high-scorers PSV, with Feyenoord and AZ Alkmaar also in hot pursuit. Itâs shaping up to be a very good title race in Holland.
Are they genuine Bundesliga title contenders this season? Probably not, but Unioners are rightly enjoying every second of their day in the sun. A brilliant 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund means Die Eisernen remain four points clear of Bayern Munich at the top of the table, and they got a comfortable victory over Heidenheim in the DFB-Pokal on Wednesday night too.
If winning ugly is the sign of champions then thatâs exactly what Arsenal showed when Bukayo Sakaâs brilliant finish and Patrick Bamfordâs penalty miss gave them a 1-0 victory over Leeds United on Sunday. Mikel Artetaâs men are now four points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League and deserve to be taken very seriously indeed.
For the third week running Napoli have cemented their place at the top of our rankings, and theyâre holding firm at the top of Serie A too. Luciano Spallettiâs side had to work hard for their 3-2 win over Bologna, but another goal from Victor Osimhen clinched the three points in the end. Sunday eveningâs trip to Roma will be one to watch for sure.
