Chelsea head coach Graham Potter has made an honest admission over the Blues’ poor defending against Aston Villa.

Ollie Watkins netted the opening goal of the game at Stamford Bridge after poor communication between Marc Cucurella and Kalidou Koulibaly.

The Spaniard headed over Koulibaly and into the path of Watkins, who ran in on goal before chipping over Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Things went from bad to worse in the second half for Chelsea as John McGinn added the second of the game as the Blues fell to a disappointing defeat.

Speaking after the match, Potter discussed the individual errors and admitted that he must take responsibility as well as his players.

When asked about the confusion between his defenders for the first goal, he told Scott Trotter: “It’s football, it’s one action and a bit of a miscommunication and something for me to take responsibility for.”

Potter continued to admit that the players are aware of external pressure and negativity but continue to be committed to Chelsea.

“They’re professionals, they understand what it is,” he said. “They’re honest and we’re fighting together. There’s no complaints.

“I understand when you lose at home that people are going to be angry. Whatever criticism comes I have to accept.”

The defeat saw Chelsea’s four-match unbeaten run come to an abrupt end, with a tough clash against fellow struggles Liverpool to come in mid-week.

Potter knows that the pressure will continue to mount on him unless results and performances improve in the coming weeks, with a Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid upcoming.
