Birmingham City have announced the appointment of former player Jo Potter as their assistant coach.

FAWSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from Birmingham City.

The former England international spent the majority of her career with the Midlands club across three separate spells. She also had stints with Arsenal, Everton, and Reading before retiring from playing in 2021.

Most recently, Potter has spent the last four years coaching at Coventry United and she was part of the backroom staff that helped The Red and Greens secure FA Women’s Championship survival on the final day of this season despite incurring a 10-point deduction earlier in the campaign.

It has been confirmed that Potter has signed a two-year-deal as Birmingham City assistant coach and after joining the Blues, she said “It is surreal. I knew it was the right place for me to come back to for my career. I’m really excited.

“I’ve always got Blues in my heart. I spent over a decade of my career here. It didn’t take much convincing for me to come back.”

The announcement comes hot on the heels of Darren Carter penning a two-year-deal of his own to become permanent Birmingham City head coach after taking interim charge in November 2021. The Blues boss was ecstatic in the wake of the news of Potter’s employment.

“The fact that she has been at the club and cares about it, is a big thing,” he said. “She will have the respect of the players and she wants to drive my vision with me.

“It will go down very well with the players and supporters and I am looking forward to it.”

Having someone of Potter’s history and reputation with the club could be a real shot in the arm if the coaching staff are looking to galvanize a group of players still gripped by the disappointment of relegation. Upon the relegation of the Second City club, there was a cloud of uncertainty hanging over the side. Yet, securing the services of Carter following a marked improvement since his arrival and the appointment of Potter in the assistant role, could be a sign of good things to come as the team look to plot a promotion push next season in the FA Women’s Championship.
