Liverpool are reportedly set for a huge boost as Diogo Jota is closing in on a return to training following his knee injury.
According to the Daily Mail, Jota is poised to return to full first-team training on Wednesday after extensive individual work on the pitch throughout the month.
The report claims that Jota is unlikely to be fit enough to face Sheffield United at the weekend, but could be available for Liverpool the following Thursday against Chelsea in the Premier League.
ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT
You only have to look at Jota’s record this season to see why his return could be a huge boost to Jurgen Klopp’s side in the coming weeks. The Portuguese international has scored nine goals in nine starts across the Premier League and Champions League for Liverpool following his summer switch from Wolves, which included a hat-trick against Atalanta in the group stages.
With Liverpool still competing in the Premier League and the Champions League, having a goalscorer like Jota back in the mix could improve their chances of achieving success this season. Jota has proven that he can produce top-quality performances at the top level and he could provide the goals Liverpool have been lacking in recent weeks with Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino struggling for form.
Mane and Firmino have managed 13 goals in 44 Premier League starts between them this season, whilst Jota has produced five in five starts. This suggests that Jota could offer more help to Mo Salah and ease the goalscoring burden on the Egyptian, which could also help Mane and Firmino improve by taking some of the pressure off them to score the goals.
