Portsmouth are ‘unlikely’ to sign Bailey Wright from Sunderland despite reports claiming he was close to joining.
The Australian international has struggled to establish himself as a regular in Tony Mowbray’s XI this season, even if he has featured in 14 league games so far.
It had been suggested earlier in the month that Wright was a target for Aberdeen, before an update on Tuesday indicated a move to Fratton Park was on the cards for the defender.
However, in a fresh development, journalist Andrew Moon has cooled talk of Wright arriving on the south coast.
“I’m told Bailey Wright is unlikely to join Pompey.”
It’s expected to be a very busy end to the window for Portsmouth, who are under new management after John Mousinho was named as Danny Cowley’s successor last week, and he has gone on to guide the team to successive victories since.
He is sure to want to bring in his own players and a centre-back is sure to be on the radar as Michael Morrison is set to join Cambridge.

The verdict
This is a shame for Pompey fans as Wright would have been a very smart signing as he is an experienced defender, a leader and someone who has proven himself at this level by winning promotion in the past.
So, he would’ve ticked a lot of boxes and could have been an important player for the new boss, but it’s seemingly unlikely to happen.
Nevertheless, you would still expect Pompey to bring in at least one defender before the deadline and it will be interesting to see who they go for.
