Reports of Manchester City weighing up a big-money move for FC Porto and Portugal international goalkeeper Diogo Costa have been clarified in regional media.
Speculation around City’s goalkeeping department has intensified in recent days amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding Ederson’s future and growing interest from Turkish Super Lig giants Galatasaray.
While Diogo Costa had emerged as a reported top target in recent months, the club’s internal view appears to have now shifted – or perhaps never aligned with outside reporting in the first place.
Costa had seemingly ticked all the boxes for a City goalkeeper with ball-playing ability, a commanding presence, and Champions League pedigree, while standout performances for FC Porto and Portugal led to heightened belief that he could be Ederson’s long-term successor.
However, with Ederson still on the books – and Stefan Ortega Moreno pushing for a greater role or a move elsewhere – City’s immediate priority in the goalkeeping department may lie more around the profile of Burnley’s James Trafford.
According to a new report from the Manchester Evening News’ Tyrone Marshall, following on from reports in Portugal overnight, Manchester City officials have no interest in signing FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa.
Reports in Portugal suggested that City were working behind-the-scenes on the possibility of making a €60 million proposal for the 25-year-old, which appeared to clash with the common belief that a deal for the aforementioned Burnley shot-stopper was being worked on.
Should a suitable offer be tabled for Ederson, the Premier League giants would have to assess whether to promote Stefan Ortega to the number one role or explore the possibility of bringing James Trafford in to the very forefront of their goalkeeping department.
Ortega, for his part, has ambitions of becoming a first-choice goalkeeper and would consider a move if that prospect does not materialise at City. However, there is some belief that staff would be content to move forward with Ortega as their primary option.
City’s current third-choice keeper Marcus Bettinelli, brought in for squad cover, is unlikely to be promoted to a more senior role, and any further developments in the position are expected to align with clarity on Ederson’s future. For now, the prospect of a blockbuster Diogo Costa signing has been shut down.
