Leeds United's owners have been linked with a takeover of Rangers
Paul Robinson has raised a legal concern surrounding the potential Leeds United and Rangers partnership.
It was reported earlier this month by the Daily Record that the Whites’ owners, 49ers Enterprises, are in talks with the Scottish giants over a potential takeover.
This could have a big impact on Leeds, and move them into a multi-club model that has become very prevalent in the modern game.
While minority investors at Elland Road, Red Bull, also own multiple clubs, this would be a much bigger step into that world for the Yorkshire outfit.
Robinson believes that the takeover of Rangers won’t have a massive impact at Leeds if it goes through.
However, he has claimed there could be some legal issues that the clubs have to deal with should they both be competing in Europe in the same season.
“I don’t think there’s any real pros or cons to it at all,” said Robinson, via MOT Leeds News.
“I think the only issue with legal reason, if they’re in a European competition together, then that could be an issue.
“But actually, with the dual ownership, I think the Leeds chairman, the way that the club’s been run, there was the influx of money from Red Bull as well that came in this season.
“The only hits that they’ve had, the only glint that you can see in the system with that was putting the Red Bulls on the shirt, you know, the colour changes.
“I think that was but it drove the sales of the second kit through the roof.
“Investment at any level is good and it just shows the power, the business network that they’ve got.
“And I don’t think having another club, you know, the likes of Rangers is going to be an issue to Leeds in any way, shape or form whether there’ll be player trading going each way.
“But then you look at the players that are in the Rangers side at the moment.
“Would any of the players from Rangers get into the Leeds United side in the Championship? You would question that.
“But maybe it would work the other way with players going on loan.”
Leeds have moved five points clear of second place Sheffield United following their 3-1 win at Bramall Lane last Monday.
Daniel Farke’s side are sitting in a comfortable position in top spot in the table, with Burnley in third seven points back.
The Whites have won their last five league games in a row, and look to have one foot back in the Premier League.
Up next for Leeds is a home clash against West Brom on 1 March.
Any takeover is going to be a complicated matter, but bringing two big clubs under one ownership could prove particularly tricky.
That isn’t to say it will be impossible, but this legal factor is a hurdle that will have to be overcome, especially as Rangers are regularly competing in Europe every year.
If Leeds are back in the Premier League next year then they will also have the chance to qualify, and this will surely be their long-term ambition.
Aside from this issue, it’s very possible that there won’t be much interaction between the two clubs outside of that other than the sharing of knowledge and information, but we won’t know any concrete plans until a deal goes through.
