Two weeks ago we got exclusive information that Premier League teams were queueing up to try and make an attempt to sign Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic this summer. Brentford and Wolves had the most concrete interest, and were going to look to strengthen with his addition if the Blues would let him go.

Even in the weeks since then, any deal to sell the 25 year old looks less likely. The Serbian stopper has been having a great season on loan at Strasbourg, topping many metrics for keepers all across Europe and looking like he’s got the potential to get even better. He was already perfectly solid when playing for us last season, he just needed to show that there was even more room for improvement, and he’s more than achieved that.

The number (and size) of teams interested in him will only grow as his good form continues.

The €36m we speculated that Chelsea would demand for him would be a huge profit on what we paid – but right now we don’t see why we’d take that money. It’s become clear that our sporting directors are determined not to sign another goalie, and given that selling one would see foolish.

Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen have both struggled this season, and with every passing week they both basically play themselves out of long term contention. From being the spare man last summer, Petrovic now looks the best option we have, and if we’re really determined not to sign another player in that position, most fans would agree that he should get the gloves back next season.

In that case, the less said about the decision to loan him out in the first place, the better…
