Ange Postecoglou has made history after Tottenham Hotspur’s success in the Europa League.
Spurs secured their first major trophy in 17 years after beating Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final on Thursday night. Brennan Johnson’s goal was the difference between the sides, sealing success for the North Londoners in Bilbao.
For Postecoglou, it continues a coaching career in which silverware has followed. The 59-year-old has won honours with Brisbane Roar, Australia, Yokohama F. Marinos, Celtic and Tottenham Hotspur.
He’s become the first Australian to win a major European trophy and the first from outside Europe or South America. Incredibly, Postecoglou is just the fourth non-European coach to lift a UEFA title.
Each of the previous non-European coaches to win a UEFA competition have been Argentinian, with Luis Carniglia (2x European Cup with Real Madrid), Helenio Herrera (2x European Cup with Inter Milan) and Diego Simeone (2x Europa League with Atletico Madrid) achieving the feat.
