Newcastle United are interested in recruiting Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge but they would prefer to make a loan addition at this stage, according to the Daily Mail.

It’s currently unclear whether the Blades would be willing to see the Norwegian go out on loan – but a similar proposal was put forward by Chelsea in the summer and that was reportedly rejected.

The Blades will also want to guarantee themselves a hefty fee now, not just for cash flow purposes and to reinvest in their squad but also to give themselves a good chance of securing an exit from their current transfer embargo.

United’s coaching staff were told to leave Berge out of their matchday squad yesterday with a potential move on the horizon, with several teams including the Magpies, Fulham and Liverpool thought to be interested in him ahead of tomorrow night’s deadline.

However, Eddie Howe’s side may have ruled themselves out of the race for him already, with the Tyneside outfit keen to strike a loan deal for a player rather than a permanent agreement.

And in a further blow to their potential hopes of getting a deal over the line, Fulham are reportedly close to striking an agreement to take the Norwegian to Craven Cottage.

The Verdict:

The 24-year-old could be a good signing for Howe’s men but considering his injury record, it probably wouldn’t be worth spending more than £15m on him at this stage.

It would be difficult to see the Blades letting him go for that amount though considering he still has 18 months left on his contract, so you feel this is definitely a move that the Magpies should be looking to avoid.

They need to ensure they are remaining within financial fair play limits and also need to try and do everything they can to get value for money.

Although £15m or £20m may not be a huge amount of money considering there’s every chance the 24-year-old will improve further, injuries could potentially limit his impact at St James’ Park throughout his stay there.

And that’s not ideal for a Newcastle side who will need as many players available as possible next season if they do go on and secure a place in a European competition at the end of this term.

This is why they shouldn’t be too gutted if the Cottagers beat them to his signature.
