Netherlands coach Frank de Boer is of the opinion that Virgil Van Dijk will be fit in time for his nation’s first game at the European Championships later this summer, in what is an indirect boost to the Reds.
The Dutch defender was clattered into by Jordan Pickford in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park back in October and he has been missing ever since, requiring surgery on an ACL injury.
He’s working hard to recover, though, and De Boer revealed to De Telegraaf, via Sport Witness, that he expects the defender to be ready for the Euros later this year after speaking to him on FaceTime.
He said:
“He is busy with so much energy.
“If you see what he’s doing…in my time you were only allowed to kick in the swimming pool [at this point in his recovery].
“If Virgil doesn’t get a kickback and things go a little faster than expected, he should be able to make it to the European Championship opening match on June 13 against Ukraine.
“He is very important for our team, on and off the field.”
ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT
Certainly, this is a hopeful update and it should perhaps lead to the Reds seeing the defender back in action before the end of the Premier League season, as he bids to help the club retain the title.
Of course, there’s no point in getting too excited just yet as setbacks can happen but it sounds as though he is doing well and hopefully he’ll come back more robust than ever.
