Everything is pointing to Jota making his move to Celtic permanent, but you do start to get slightly more nervous as time goes by without an official announcement.

The Portuguese winger was outstanding last season and you would expect him to kick on even more next year if he does stay, and Portuguese outlet Record is reporting that the move is pretty much done.

They even claim that the contract will see him tied down for at least four seasons, while it’s thought that the total transfer fee will come to €7.5m, but there are still some details that fans will want to know.

Benfica are traditionally strong at inserting sell-on clauses so you would expect a significant amount of the next fee to go to them, but there’s no suggestion of any kind of buy-back clause which is important.

If we look at the long-term outcome for Jota, he’s still only 23 so he still has plenty of time to develop and improve, but it’s fair to wonder how many years of that four-year deal will be spent at Parkhead.

We don’t want to see repeats of the Eddy or Ajer situation where contracts started to run down, so if he does have ambitions of moving on then the optimum time to sell would be the summer of 2024 when he still has two years to go.

It’s worth remembering that he was never a regular starter at Benfica so next year will be the first time in his career where he hopefully goes into a new season already established within a squad, and it’s going to be exciting to see if that familiarity can bring even more out of him.
