Paris Saint-Germain 2-2 Tottenham (4-3 on penalties)

Gonçalo Ramos enjoyed one of his best moments in a Paris Saint-Germain shirt last night, coming off the bench to score a vital late equaliser as the European champions overcame Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Super Cup.

Spurs stunned the French side by going 2-0 up in the showpiece occasion in Udine, Italy, which pits the winners of the Champions League against the Europa League holders. Goals from defenders Micky van de Ven and Christian Romero had the English team two goals up heading towards the last five minutes at the Bluenrgy Stadium.

However, PSG somehow turned the outcome with remarkable recovery. First, Korean forward Lee Kang-In found the bottom corner with a superb finish to half the deficit, before Portugal man Ramos, who had been thrown on in the 77th minute, headed in Ousmane Dembele’s cross deep into stoppage time to send the contest to a penalty shootout.

Not content with saving his side once, Ramos proved pivotal in the shootout. PSG missed their first kick, Vitinha inexplicably firing wide when opting to keep his eyes on Spurs keeper Guglielmo Vicario, meaning when Ramos stepped up, his team were 2-0 down with one kick in-hand. The former Benfica man crashed his penalty down the centre of the goal to reignite PSG’s hopes.

Tottenham then missed successive kicks and in the end it was left to Nuno Mendes to take the deciding penalty for PSG. The former Sporting full-back duly stepped up and rifled his finish down the centre of the goal, much like Ramos had done earlier, to secure the trophy for PSG for the first time in their history.

While Ramos was a late introduction, Nuno Mendes and Vitinha both played the full match, but fellow Portuguese João Neves was suspended following his red card against Chelsea in the Club World Cup.

Ramos earned plenty of plaudits for his contribution. Having scored 19 goals in all competitions last season in his role as a squad player, there were some suggestions he could be tempted away by any offer of more regular first-team football. However, in the mix-zone following the trophy celebrations, Ramos told reporters: “Yes, I’m staying this season.

“I'm very happy, it's a wonderful day, and we won a special trophy because we don't know if we'll ever compete for it again

"My entry? I have the same outlook as always. I'm ready when the team needs me. When I receive the ball like that, I score."
