Portugal v Uruguay

A second half Bruno Fernandes double saw Portugal beat Uruguay 2-0 and book their place in the last 16 of the World Cup.

Cristiano Ronaldo was named in attack as Portugal looked to claim the win that would take them into the knockout stage.

Uruguay meanwhile dropped Luis Suarez after his poor performance against South Korea last time out, and replaced him with Edinson Cavani.

It was Portugal who went relatively close to scoring in the opening exchanges as William Carvahlo’s volley went over the bar after great work by Ronaldo.

But Uruguay were doing their utmost to make this a scrappy game with few chances, and succeeded with half an hour gone.

Rodrigo Bentancur almost then turned this game on its head as the Uruguay man waltzed through the opposition defence but saw his effort saved well by Diogo Costa.

Into the second half and once again the South American side were doing their best to make this a bitty foul-fest.

But Portugal did manage to find a way through on 54 minutes as Bruno Fernandes’s cross went over the head of Ronaldo and into the far corner.

Uruguay went close to getting their own goal soon after though as Maxi Gomez’s effort curled around the goalkeeper but back off the post.

They were really pushing for that equaliser now and went close through Luis Suarez, only for the veteran striker to put his low effort the wrong side of the side netting.

In injury time however, Portugal had their chance to grab a second as Bruno Fernandes won a penalty after handball by Jose Gimenez.

The Manchester United man stepped up himself and slotted home for the win.

Brazil take narrow win thanks to Casemiro thunderbolt

Determined Switzerland were undone by a rocket from Casemiro after an otherwise tight defensive display.

After a cagey start from both sides, Vinícius Junior tested goalkeeper Yann Sommer when he got on the end of a cross from Raphinha, but couldn’t quite get enough contact on the ball.

Brazil were struggling to find a way through the compact Swiss formation, and had a scare just before the break when Ruben Vargas forced Alisson to dive on the ball to prevent an easy tap-in at the near post.

Into the second half, and Richarlison was just inches away from getting on the end of a superb cross from Vinícius, and Alisson had to be on his toes at the other end when Breel Embolo was ready to steal the ball away from him.

It was going to take a moment of pure quality to unlock the Switzerland defence, and Vinícius provided that with a deft first touch and a perfectly executed strike beyond Sommer, but it wasn’t to be as his effort was ruled out for an offside on Richarlison.

With only seven minutes of normal time remaining, Casemiro sent the Brazilian fans wild with a thumping effort as he lashed a shot into the back of the net with the outside of his right boot.

Rodrygo almost made it 2-0 in added time, but for an excellent block from Manuel Akanji.

Second half comeback earns Cameroon point in thriller

Scorers: Castelletto 29′, Aboubakar 64′, Choupo-Moting 66′; Pavlović 45+1, Milinković-Savić 45+4′, Mitrović 53′.

Cameroon completed a stunning second half comeback to earn a draw against Serbia in one of the games of the tournament so far.

Serbia should’ve led in the opening 15 minutes with Aleksandar Mitrović spurning two golden chances to break the deadlock, first by hitting the post from a tight angle after wriggling space inside the box.

Three Cameroon defenders then failed to clear the ball leading to it falling into the path of the Fulham striker six yards out but somehow he spurned the chance wide of the post.

Jean-Charles Castelletto showed Mitrović how it was done to give Cameroon the lead in the 29th minute, arriving at the back post to tap in Eric Choupo-Moting’s flick-on from a corner.

But Serbia turned the game on it’s head by scoring two goals in first half added time to go into the break ahead.

Strahinja Pavlović headed home Dušan Tadic’s free-kick before Sergej Milinković-Savić curled into the bottom corner from the edge of the box to move Serbia ahead.

Dragan Stojković’s side then looked to have taken the game out of Cameroon’s reach with a well-worked team goal eight minutes into the second half.

Tadić won the ball back high up before Mitrović and Milinković-Savić linked up to set Andrija Živković away down the right and his cut-back was slotted home by Mitrović.

However, Cameroon brought Vincent Aboubakar from the bench for the final half an hour and with it the encounter descended into chaos.

Cameroon continued to exploit the space behind Serbia’s back-line with persistent through balls to the on-running Aboubakar and through it scored two goals in three minutes to perform a stunning comeback.

Aboubakar scored the first, running through on goal and turning a Serbia defender inside-out before lofting the ball over the head over goalkeeper Vanja Milinković-Savić with a sublime finish.

He then turned from goalscorer to provider, again galloping into the space behind the Serbian high line and sliding the ball across goal for Choupo-Moting to slot in at the far post.

The result leaves both teams sitting with only one point ahead of the final matchday with Brazil facing Switzerland in the other game in this group later today.

Ghana overcome South Korea in second thriller of the day

Scorers: Cho 58′, 61′; Salisu 24′, Kudus 34′, 68′.

Ghana gave their hopes of qualifying for the last 16 a huge boost when they overcame South Korea in a topsy-turvy Group H encounter.

The Black Stars took the lead midway through the first half when a set-piece delivery into the box was scrambled in from close range by Mohammed Salisu. The goal was allowed to stand despite a VAR check against André Ayew for handball.

The second Ghana goal came 10 minutes later. A great cross into the box from Jordan Ayew found Mohammed Kudus to head home superbly.

South Korea pulled a goal back just before the hour mark, when Ghana’s Tariq Lamptey was caught in possession and Lee Kang-in’s cross into the box was headed in by Cho Gue-sung.

And within two minutes they were level. Cho was again the scorer with another header, this time from Kim Jin-su’s cross.

But their joy was short-lived, with Kudus soon bagging his second of the game to put Ghana 3-2 up with a low finish after a cross found its way to him at the back post.

South Korea went in search of another equaliser but some good goalkeeping from Ghana’s Lawrence Ati-Zigi kept the score at 3-2 when the full-time whistle blew.

The result leaves Ghana on three points, while South Korea remain on one.
