Jermain Defoe is arguably one of the best strikers to have ever graced the English game.

Boasting a record of 284 goals since coming through the ranks as a youngster at West Ham United, the former England man is now without a club after leaving Glasgow Rangers and is currently looking for his next port of call.

Prolific spells with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Sunderland, Portsmouth, AFC Bournemouth and Toronto have come and gone and now at the age of 39 the pint sized striker is searching for a challenge that can reignite the fire within his belly.

Almost immediately he has been linked with a return to the Stadium of Light this month, with Sunderland themselves said to be keen on a reunion with the player that last scored 37 goals in 93 games for them.

However it could well be suggested that Portsmouth should also throw their hat into the ring for the frontman, especially when you take into account how well Defoe’s last spell at Fratton Park went.

It was short but sweet but the Londoner still managed to bag 18 goals in 36 games, thus becoming a popular player in and amongst the Pompey faithful.

Indeed the South Coast side are currently in the market for a striker after seeing the likes of Ellis Harrison and Gassan Ahadme depart this month, so it would come down to a question over whether they could financially afford the veteran on a permanent deal.

Defoe offers an option that is not only experienced but also one that boasts a level of striking quality that is so tough to find at this level of the Football League.

It is for this reason that the striker is sure to be inundated with offers and there is a fair case to be argued that Pompey should be one of those that enter the race.

Danny Cowley has already shown that he isn’t afraid to put his faith in players at the older age of the spectrum and for that reason this could be a name that he takes a serious look at this month.

However it is sure to be a saga that will take a good while to be resolved, especially if Sunderland step up their interest and make an offer for the striker. So Pompey must therefore move quickly if they want to get their man.
