Portsmouth have been promoted to the Barclays Women’s Championship for the first time in their history.

Pompey’s position at the top of the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division table was confirmed this afternoon without the team having to kick a ball.

Nearest challengers Hashtag United went into the day nine points adrift of Portsmouth with just three games left to play. Pompey knew that a slip up for Hashtag United at Ipswich Town would confirm their position as FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division title-winners.

The two sides couldn’t be separated for more than an hour, however, Ipswich Town opened the scoring in the 69th minute through Natasha Thomas. Hashtag United needed to score twice to stay in the title race but they ended up losing the game 2-0 with Ruby Doe netting a second goal for the hosts on the break deep in second half stoppage time.

While Hashtag United were left to pick themselves up in Felixstowe, the celebrations started in Portsmouth with the club having been crowned 2023/2024 FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division champions.

Portsmouth can now look forward to some mouth-watering fixtures in the Barclays Women’s Championship next season including big derbies against local rivals Southampton.
