FLW takes a look at the net worth of Portsmouth owner Michael Eisner against some of the richest clubs in England.

Portsmouth owner Michael Eisner was CEO of The Walt Disney Company for more than 20 years, but his net worth is no match for some of the richest clubs in the Premier League.

It was revealed in March 2017, during Portsmouth's League Two title-winning season, that American businessman Michael Eisner and his Tornante Company were to enter exclusive discussions about taking ownership of the club.

Later that year, The Pompey Supporters Trust voted in favour of Eisner buying 100% of the club for £5.67 million, with the promise that a further £10 million would be invested during his tenure.

In 2022, Eisner told the BBC about his plans for Pompey, stating that he hoped they could reach the Premier League within 10 years.

"I think we've invested four times more than we committed to back when we made the deal five or six years ago," said Eisner.

"I like the idea of eventually competing with Southampton.

"In five or 10 years the club will still be under our ownership and I hope we will not be in League One.

"In 10 years, I don't know, maybe we'll be in the Premier League? Who knows - hopefully."

Now, almost two years later, Portsmouth have reached the Championship under John Mousinho, and it will be interesting to see whether they can survive during their first campaign in the second tier since being relegated to League One in 2012.

Eisner had one eye on the Premier League a couple of years ago, so let's take a look at his net worth in comparison with some of the richest owners in the top flight of English football.

According to Forbes, Eisner's net worth is $1.1 billion, with his time as CEO of The Walt Disney Company and his investment firm, Tornante Company, having been key contributors to the growth of his wealth.

Eisner's riches would rank him above just two current Premier League owners, with Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis and Matthew Benham of Brentford worth £479 million and £216.3 million respectively, as per data from GiveMeSport.com.

Newcastle United have by far the wealthiest owners in the top flight, with the Saudi Public Investment Fund, RB Sports & Media, and PCP Capital Partners boasting a whopping net worth of £478 billion.

Manchester United's owners, the Glazer Family and Sir Jim Ratcliffe, have a net worth of £19.2 billion, while Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris are valued at £13.8 billion as owners of Aston Villa.

Unsurprisingly, Manchester City also feature towards the top of the list, with the Abu Dhabi United Group and Silver Lake having a net worth of £12.9 billion. Chelsea owners Todd Boehly, Hansjorg Wyss, and Mark Walter, alongside Ipswich Town's ownership group, Gamechanger 20 Ltd, complete the top six, with respective net worths of £12.21 billion and £10.8 billion.

Southampton would be one place above rivals Portsmouth in the list, with their owners, Sport Republic and Katharina Liebherr, worth £1 billion.

Michael Eisner wants to make a lasting impact at Portsmouth

During his time as owner of Portsmouth, Eisner has made significant investment into Fratton Park, helped the club take ownership of its training ground for the first time ever, and put together a squad that secured promotion back to the Championship.

In an interview with the BBC, the 82-year-old previously made it clear that any offers to purchase the club would be "deleted".

"We will not be sellers in my lifetime," said Eisner.

"I have three sons that don't intend to be sellers either.

"Emails about sales or propositions will be deleted."

It seems as though the Eisner family intends to own Portsmouth for many years to come, and the supporters will hope that they can continue on an upwards trajectory under their leadership.

Despite not ranking among the richest owners in the country, there is no doubt that Eisner has the financial capability to take Portsmouth to another promotion if everything falls into place over the next few years.
