Portsmouth FC enter the 2025/26 Championship campaign with the ambition of improving upon their 16th-place finish last season.

John Mousinho has added Márk Kosznovszky, John Swift, Luke Le Roux, Min-hyeok Yang and Florian Bianchini to his ranks this summer, with fellow new boy Adrian Segecic scoring the only goal in Pompey’s opening day victory over Oxford United.

However, there have been concerns surrounding the Fratton Park outfit’s creative ability going into the new term.

Josh Murphy scored seven goals and provided 14 assists in the second-tier for Portsmouth last season, which was the best return of his career.

His ability and talent shone throughout, with Pompey becoming quickly reliant on the forward to produce their attacking output.

This isn’t sustainable, however, with Murphy’s injury record leaving much to be desired, forcing him to miss the opening few weeks of this season.

Mousinho has been keen to address that this summer and could be close to securing the perfect remedy.

Abu Kamara could fix Portsmouth FC’s Josh Murphy issue

One player that Portsmouth have been continuously linked with is Hull City’s Abu Kamara, who ran out for Pompey during the 2023/24 campaign on loan.

Mousinho previously admitted that he would’ve secured the 22-year-old’s services permanently, but was unable to match Norwich City’s asking price.

According to Darren Witcoop via X, Pompey still hold a key interest in Kamara and could still make a move to sign him this window.

The young attacker scored eight goals and contributed 10 assists during his season at Fratton Park, which culminated with Portsmouth clinching the League One title.

If paired with Murphy on the wings, Mousinho would possess two extremely dangerous outlets in wide areas, which would reduce the reliance put upon their current star.

Kamara completed 1.58 successful dribbles per 90 during his year with Portsmouth, with 5.42 touches in the opposition box per game.

This highlights the forward’s attacking prowess and how destructive he can be in dangerous areas, which is why Mousinho has been so open about his desire to reacquire that asset.

Colby Bishop would naturally benefit from having another creator on the wing that would be firing balls into the box for him to lash home, which further boosts Pompey’s chances of winning more games and improving up the league.

Murphy has started the season sidelined and won’t appear in the Portsmouth team for a few weeks yet. His absence will become increasingly felt as the campaign rolls on, which would make recruiting a profile such as Kamara all the more important.

Portsmouth will have to convince Hull City to part ways with Abu Kamara

Securing Kamara’s services would be a real boost for Pompey as the transfer window ends and squads are finalised, but they still face the task of prising the forward from Hull City’s grasp.

The Tigers only signed the 22-year-old last summer for a reported £5 million but failed to make a lasting impact at the MKM Stadium, scoring five goals and providing three assists.

However, the Yorkshire outfit will likely be searching to recoup a large amount of the money they forked out on Kamara, which could be a major hurdle for Pompey to overcome.

Furthermore, the attacker started Hull’s first game of the Championship season against Coventry City, which highlights Sergej Jakirovic’s desire to keep him at the club.

Therefore, although it would be a perfect signing for Pompey, Mousinho and Co. would face some serious challenges if they were to complete a deal for the popular Kamara.
