Portsmouth have signed Manchester United defender Di’Shon Bernard on loan, the League One club have announced.

After spending time with Chelsea as a youngster, Bernard joined United as a 16-year-old back in the summer of 2017.

The defender has since gone on to make a single senior appearance for the Red Devils, as a substitute in a Europa League clash with FC Astana in November 2019.

Since then, the now 22-year-old has gone on to spend time on loan with Salford City in League Two, and Hull City in the Championship, in each of the last two seasons.

Now though, Bernard is set for a stint in League One, with it confirmed that the centre back has completed a loan move to Portsmouth until the end of the current campaign.

Having completed that move, Bernard becomes Pompey’s third signing of the January transfer window.

Who did the club sign Sean Raggett from?

Lincoln City Colchester United Bournemouth Norwich City

Fellow centre back Ryley Towler has already joined permanently from Bristol City, while goalkeeper Matt Macey has arrived on loan from Luton Town.

This does look like it could be a rather good signing for Portsmouth to have completed here.

The club were arguably short on centre backs going into the January window, and that issue was further enhanced by Michael Morrison’s recent departure to Cambridge.

As a result, bringing in Bernard gives them some useful extra depth at centre back, and they are bringing in a promising young player who already has a decent amount of first-team experience under his belt to do that with.

Given this will give the 22-year-old a chance of regular football that he was unlikely to get at Manchester United as well, it does seem as though this move should work well for all involved.
