Portsmouth have unveiled their second signing of the January window, bringing in Coventry City frontman Tyler Walker until the end of the season, the club has confirmed.

The 25-year-old has only scored twice for the Sky Blues this term but boasts vast experience throughout the Football League.

In a more prominent role last campaign, Walker found the back of the net seven times as Coventry secured a 16th-placed finish upon their return to the Championship.

This time out, though, the former Nottingham Forest man has been reduced to a bit-part role following the arrival of Viktor Gyokeres.

The Swedish hitman has appeared in all but one of his side’s outings so far, meaning that regular game time has come at a premium for Walker.

But having scored fourteen times for Lincoln City in the 2019/20 season, he will hope that his third-tier pedigree can aid Portsmouth’s promotion push.

Danny Cowley’s side currently sit ninth in League One and are six points outside of the play-offs, however, they have a game in hand.

This saw John Marquis join Lincoln City on a short-term contract until the end of the current campaign, while Welshman Ellis Harrison has left for Fleetwood Town on a permanent transfer.

The Verdict:

Given Walker’s experience and track record, this acquisition appears a real statement of intent by Portsmouth as they look to trump their promotion rivals.

He is a player who, when relied on, will certainly score at this level and his ability to find the back of the net with both feet may well make him a troubling proposition for opposition defenders.

And, for Walker, it also looks a good move. At 25 and approaching his prime, he will no doubt be wanting to nail down a regular starting spot in the near future.
