Portsmouth midfielder Michael Jacobs has admitted to The News that he doesn’t currently fit into Danny Cowley’s system of play.

The 30-year-old found himself out of the side during the weekend just gone away at Gillingham, with the Portsmouth manager choosing to revert to a three at the back formation.

Jacobs did however see himself get introduced as a substitute in place of Reeco Hackett-Fairchild in the 81st minute and had a hand in the goal which ultimately proved to be the winner, with his effort taking a big deflection off of Gills defender Jack Tucker.

Nevertheless, Jacobs was quick to admit that he doesn’t currently fit into what Cowley is looking to do with his side at present:

“As a wide man, it’s a difficult formation for me to get in.

“You are a bit limited unless you become a wing-back or an attacker or a number nine or whatever – and we have good options in those areas.

“I probably could play wing-back, I’m not too sure how well, but I will do a job there for a team.

“As a winger, it doesn’t suit the system. However, I came on against Gillingham as a number 10 and that’s definitely a role I can do.”

Jacobs has featured on 11 occasions for the South Coast side this season across all competitions and continues to be an important member of the squad despite having previously made it clear that he would be keen to move to Ipswich Town before a transfer broke down over the summer.

The winger is now into the final year of his contract at Fratton Park.

The Verdict

It has been a strange season for Jacobs to say the least and it has been quite remarkable that he hasn’t lost his professionalism despite everything that went on throughout the summer.

He has come up with the goods for Cowley on more than one occasion and may well feel slightly hard done by that he was dropped against Gillingham.

However he did make a great impact during the small amount of time that he spent on the pitch, which underlines just how versatile he can be.

With his future still very much still up in the air at Fratton Park, it will be interesting to see if he is still a Portsmouth player come the end of January.
