Porto sign Nico González from Barcelona | OneFootball

After protracted negotiations, FC Porto have completed the signing of Barcelona midfielder Nico González on a five-year contract. The Spaniard cost the Dragons €8.4 million.

“It was complicated to close the deal because Barcelona are in the United States at the moment which made the contacts difficult,” said Porto president Pinto da Costa.

“But he was set on coming to Porto and I believe he’ll add to our team.”

Although just 21 years old, González played a full season at Barcelona in 2021/22 (39 matches) and spent last season on loan at Valencia (26 matches). He is a regular for the Spain U21 team.

Barcelona decided to release him but the Catalan giants appear to believe he can still become a big player in the future, as evidenced by two clauses in the deal.

The Spanish club are entitled to 40% of any profit in a future sale of González. Moreover, Barcelona have an option to buy back the player for a fee of €30 million until 30 June 2025.

“I’m happy because he was a player we really wanted and he was observed and approved by coach Sérgio Conceição,” added Pinto da Costa. “Calmly, we’re building a better and stronger squad.”
