New Tottenham signing Pedro Porro is pleased that he’s starting to integrate at Spurs and has hailed Antonio Conte’s role in helping him settle.

The Spain international made the move from Sporting Lisbon to Tottenham in January after the north London club agreeing a loan deal until the end of the season with an obligation to buy.

A few of his early performances have been criticised by fans and pundits but his displays against Nottingham Forest and Southampton in recent weeks have been much more positive.

Speaking to Portuguese newspaper A Bola (via Sport Witness) about his move to Tottenham and Conte’s influence before his sacking, Porro said: “The first few weeks were complicated, I didn’t know the city or the club, I knew a few words of English and it was lucky that Conte is Italian and that helped me to understand him.

“But, little by little, I’m integrating, getting to know my teammates better and mastering the language more. I prefer not to talk about the club, I’m still at the beginning and I don’t want anything I say to be misinterpreted.”

Porro had a debut to forget as Leicester City beat Tottenham 4-1 back in February with former Spurs manager Tim Sherwood insisting the Spaniard had been “so bad it’s unbelievable”.

Sherwood said at the time: “I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt because it’s his debut but Pedro Porro is so bad it’s unbelievable.

“His positioning is disgusting, Barnes and Maddison are destroying him down the left hand side. He’s just ran inside him, he hasn’t even seen him, he gets the ball played in and lets him run inside him.”

After hearing of Sherwood’s comments Porro promised that the former Premier League title winner will have “to shut his mouth” when he becomes a success in north London.

And now Porro has again responded to those comments, he added to A Bola: “I think the person who did it [Sherwood] was too hard on me, he didn’t know me.

“I had just arrived and in the time I was on the field there was little else I could do. I hope that one day that person recognises that he was unfair and that he was wrong in this way.”

On Sporting Lisbon beating Arsenal in the Europa League recently, Porro added: “I couldn’t go to the stadium because I wasn’t allowed to leave the house and I had to watch it on television. I lived the game as one more player on the team and with the same spirit as someone on the field with those who, until recently, had been my teammates.

“What they did was very similar to the best Sporting, it was excellent, but at the same time, like Rúben Amorim, I was also upset that we didn’t do throughout the season what we saw in London. Perhaps many times we have relaxed more than what is allowed.”
