Manchester United and Republic of Ireland legend Denis Irwin couldn’t help but ask pop megastar Olivia Rodrigo for a selfie at Old Trafford on Sunday before the Reds took on Chelsea in the Premier League.
The Cork native was in attendance for the 1-1 draw as one of Manchester United’s ambassadors to greet the 21-year-old pop icon, who is known for her chart-topping hits like ‘drivers license’ and ‘good 4 u’.
Rodrigo got pitchside to watch the warm-up ahead of the game as she was snapped posing with a United shirt that had her name on the back with the number 7 printed.
She was joined by her boyfriend, actor Louis Partridge, adding a celebrity flair to the event. What’s more, Irish actor Barry Keoghan was spotted in the director’s box after featuring in one of the club’s advertising campaigns this summer.
Irwin, one of the best full-backs to have played for United, was seen smiling for a picture alongside Rodrigo. He made 368 appearances for United during a 12-year tenure, scoring 22 goals.
One of the highlights of Rodrigo’s visit was her interaction with Irwin. The moment shows the retired footballer turned club ambassador waiting patiently before asking for a selfie.
I, for one, found it funny because Irwin is usually the one being asked for autographs and photos.
Irwin’s success at United ranges from seven Premier League titles, three FA Cups, and the UEFA Champions Legaue during the treble-winning season.
On the international stage, Irwin earned 56 caps for the Republic of Ireland, and participated in the 1994 World Cup.

Unfortunately, Rodrigo didn’t get to see a win during her time at Old Trafford as United drew with Chelsea.
A Moises Caicedo volley saw Chelsea move into fourth with the hosts stuck in 13th position.
The scoring was opened after 70 minutes when Bruno Fernandes converted his penalty.
However, United’s lead only lasted four minutes.
The penalty was given after goalkeeper Robert Sanchez fouled Rasmus Hojlund inside the box.
Chelsea were quick to react and both teams had to split the spoils.
While the singer looked happy with her Manchester United shirt, a quick dig on social media helped us stumble upon a picture of Rodrigo being greeted by Chelsea full-back Ben Chillwell at Stamford Bridge.
Is she the latest celebrity to try to attach her name to United for publicity, or is she a genuine fan? Either way she has come to the right club!
Hopefully, she enjoyed the experience.
