Speaking before his Poland team play Argentina in their final group game, coach Czesław Michniewicz insisted that the meeting wasn’t simply a “tennis match” between Robert Lewandoski and Lionel Messi, Michniewicz explained:
“I know my line-up for now, but we still have one training session ahead of us. The whole world is waiting for the duel between Robert Lewandowski and Leo Messi. They are great players, but we don’t talk about that, we treat this match as a clash between Poland and Argentina. I don’t know how Argentina will play, it’s natural. None of us know. There were many changes after the match against Saudi Arabia. They played well against Mexico and I think the squad will be similar to the team from that game. I’m happy with my team’s defensive performance in our two games. It’s very important to avoid conceding goals in tournaments. You can see that the teams are limiting the risk in their own halves… There will be no one-on-one match between Robert Lewandowski and Leo Messi – this is not tennis. Each of them needs players around them. No one wins the world championship alone.”
A draw with Argentina would be enough to ensure Poland make it into the round of 16 in Qatar.
