Piotr Zielinski and Kristjan Asllani are both doubtful to return in time for Inter Milan’s Champions League clash with Young Boys.
This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They note that this could become a real headache for Inter coach Simone Inzaghi.
This evening, Inter will be without Zielinski and Asllani for their Serie A match away to Roma.
Therefore, there will be four senior midfielders available. Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Hakan Calhanoglu are expected to start, while Nicolo Barella and Davide Frattesi are vying for the third starting spot.
Meanwhile, Zielinski and Asllani are unavailable through injury.
Zielinski picked up a minor thigh strain during the international break. And Asllani, meanwhile, sustained a minor knock to the outside of his knee in training this week.
The absences of Zielinski and Asllani won’t necessarily be a massive problem for Inter coach Inzaghi this weekend.
Neither of the pair ever looked likely to start against Roma anyway,
Inzaghi will find his options restricted as far as the bench goes. But on the other hand, Inter have brought 19-year-old midfielder Thomas Berenbruch to Rome with them for the match.
But the real problems could arise if neither Zielinski nor Asllani are available for Inter’s next match.
The Nerazzurri face Young Boys in the Champions League just three days from now.
And then it is the Derby d’Italia against Juventus next Sunday.
Until the next international break, Inter will be playing two matches per week. Therefore, Inzaghi will have to manage squad rotation carefully to avoid burning key players out.
But the Inter coach may have just four senior midfielders available both this evening and in midweek.
That would hardly be ideal for setting the tone in terms of squad rotation.
Neither of Zielinski or Asllani have serious injuries. Both are pushing to return as quickly as possible.
But Inzaghi may have to cope without both on Wednesday.
