América were fortunate not to be beaten after Cruz Azul had the better of a disappointing stalemate in Sunday’s Clásico Joven.

The point came at a price for Miguel Herrera’s charges, however, with Las Águilas suffering three injuries in their ‘away’ game at the Estadio Azteca.

In fact the Azulcrema were forced into a change before kick-off after first-choice goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa injured his calf in the warm-up.

Óscar Jiménez filled in between the posts, and the 31-year-old did well to keep La Máquina at bay as they dominated the last 15 minutes of the first half.

América were hit with another injury shortly before the break when centre-back Sebastián Cáceres was seen clutching his thigh and subsequently replaced by Ramón Juárez.

There was further physical woe eight minutes after the interval when Emanuel Aguilera was forced off.

With no more central defensive options on the bench, Herrera was forced to send on defensive midfielder Santiago Cáseres.

El Piojo also introduced Federico Viñas, Leo Suárez and Andrés Ibargüen in the closing stages in an effort to snatch all three points, but to no avail.

A disappointing Mexico City derby for both sides that leaves Cruz Azul second in the Guard1anes 2020 table and América two points behind their neighbours in third.
