England will consider Mauricio Pochettino as a candidate to become their next manager if Gareth Southgate leaves his role after Euro 2024.

Pochettino left Chelsea by mutual consent this week after an end-of-season review with the club’s hierarchy, in which a decision was made to part company with the Argentine.

Chelsea ended Pochettino’s debut campaign sixth in the Premier League table, though several have expressed surprise at his exit – including a number of players on social media – after the Blues ended the season in impressive form to reach Europe.

Manchester United are long-term admirers of Pochettino and could make a move for the 50-year-old should Erik ten Hag be sacked, with the Dutchman under pressure following the club’s lowest-league finish of the Premier League era.

The Red Devils take on Manchester City in the FA Cup final this weekend and can salvage silverware and a place in Europe with a win at Wembley.

However, the Telegraph are reporting that the FA could rival Manchester United and Pochettino has previously expressed an interest in the role.

His record of developing young players and attacking brand of football make Pochettino a strong candidate to succeed Southgate, who is expected to end his eight-year reign after this summer’s major tournament.

Speaking to The Athletic in 2022, Pochettino opened up on his interest in managing the Three Lions.

“Of course, my relationship with England has always been very good. We have a very good relationship with the academies, trying to develop young players for the national team. I feel so comfortable here. You never know what happens. I am open to everything.”
