The Pilgrims are continuing their preparations for the new season, as Rooney looks to put the disappointments of Birmingham City behind him as he prepares to get a new Championship campaign underway.

Plymouth may be many people’s favourites to be relegated this season, but Rooney will be hoping his side has enough in them to cause an upset.

The club’s hopes of beating the drop may depend on whether they are able to keep hold of Whittaker, who has been a shining light for the side ever since he joined the club.

The winger has been the subject of interest from Scottish side Rangers once again, with the Daily Record revealing that the Gers had seen a bid in excess of £7 million rejected for the attacker.

After this update emerged, Plymouth boss Rooney revealed that it would take what he calls a “crazy” offer for Whittaker to leave Home Park this summer.

Rooney told Plymouth Live on Sunday after his side beat Cheltenham Town 5-1 in a pre-season friendly: “It’s the first I know.

“I have said this before, Morgan is a fantastic player, and I’m really enjoying working with him. We value Morgan very highly. Anything other than a crazy bid, we won’t be entertaining.

“Ultimately, I want Morgan to stay at the football club because he’s a very good player, and he’s the player who can make a difference.”

Rangers face Wolves and Brentford in the Morgan Whittaker race

As well as Rangers rekindling their interest in Whittaker in this transfer window, there are also other sides showing interest in signing the 23-year-old.

It was reported by Football Insider at the beginning of this month that Premier League duo Wolverhampton Wanderers and Brentford are ready to battle to sign the winger.

Serie A giants Lazio have also reignited their interest in the player after seeing a £8.5 million bid turned down by Plymouth in the January transfer window.

It has been stated that Rangers have not ended their interest there, with them expected to make an improved offer for Whittaker in this window.

Plymouth should look to hold out for £10 million for Morgan Whittaker

Plymouth have now rejected offers in the region of £7 million and £8.5 million from Rangers and Lazio, respectively.

These are two very good offers, but clearly Plymouth are holding out for a little bit more, and that should be around the £10 million mark.

That feels like a fair price for a player who was very impressive last season, as he scored 19 goals and chipped in with eight assists in 46 league games.

Obviously, the Pilgrims would rather keep hold of Whittaker, but with interest mounting once again, they may have no choice but to sell. They just need to make sure they can get the maximum price, and £10 million seems fair enough.

For Rangers, this may be too much, as the Scottish side are obviously keen on signing the player, but they might not be able to part with such a large sum of money on one player in this transfer window.
