New Plymouth Argyle head coach Ian Foster has had a lot on his plate in his first week in the job after replacing Steven Schumacher in the Home Park dugout.

He's already taken charge of his first match as he led the Pilgrims to a comfortable FA Cup success over Sutton United, but he has also seen another loan midfielder recalled in the form of Luke Cundle.

The playmaker has followed Finn Azaz out of the door after being brought back by Wolverhampton Wanderers to Molineux - only to be loaned straight back out to Stoke City, linking up with Schumacher once more.

Foster has several gaps he needs to fill in the Argyle squad before the end of January, and even though he is not in charge of transfers fully at the club, the 47-year-old's links to coaching England's youth teams in recent years will have surely been a catalyst to landing Tottenham defender Ash Phillips for the remainder of the season.

And it looks as though Foster's time with the Three Lions is set to prove beneficial in another transfer deal as a new midfielder is on the verge of arriving in Devon to help plug the gap left by Azaz and Cundle.

Plymouth set to beat QPR, Rangers and Sheffield Wednesday to Gyabi deal

Their interest was reported on Wednesday, but now Plymouth are set to complete a transfer deal for Leeds United midfielder Darko Gyabi.

That is according to a report from Football Insider, who claim that the 19-year-old is on his way to Argyle after Championship promotion hopefuls United accepted their offer.

And per Football Insider's report, there was plenty of other interest from not just other second tier English sides, but teams north of the border in Scotland too.

Scottish giants Rangers, as well as Championship strugglers Sheffield Wednesday and QPR were all keen on striking a deal for the teenager, but it is Plymouth who are set to win the battle for Gyabi's services.

Gyabi, who has played for England at five different youth levels from under-15's to under-20's, has barely featured for Leeds' first-team since joining from Man City in 2022 in what was a £5 million move to Elland Road.

He has played just five times in all competitions since the switch to West Yorkshire, and this season he's featured just the twice, with a further five appearances coming in the Premier League 2.

Gyabi is no Azaz or Cundle, but he could be very useful for Plymouth

Standing at 6 ft 5 in, Gyabi certainly packs a physical presence for such a young player, and he can also get up and down the pitch as a box-to-box midfielder.

Gyabi is actually pretty versatile in the midfield positions he can be utilised in - despite mostly playing in either a holding role or as an 'eight' last season for Leeds' under-21's, he has featured as more of an attacking midfielder this season at that level, just showing the different roles he can play in.

He isn't expected to be a direct replacement for Cundle or Azaz's technical ability in the final third as they brought a lot of goal contributions to Argyle, and Gyabi has to prove he has that in his locker at senior level.
