According to Football Insider, the Scottish Premiership side are now set to focus their attention on improving their attacking options for the campaign ahead.

Whittaker impressed many with his performances for the Pilgrims last season, earning his way into the EFL’s Championship team of the year.

The 23-year-old contributed 19 goals and eight assists in the second division, playing a pivotal role in the club avoiding relegation straight back to League One (all stats from Fbref).

However, his future at Home Park is now uncertain amid interest from the Scottish giants.

It has been reported by Football Scotland that Plymouth have placed a £10 million asking price on Whittaker’s future.

The club have already reportedly had two bids rejected by the Championship side this summer, as Philippe Clement eyes a forward that can push his side towards the title this year.

But the £10 million asking price is believed to be too much for Rangers to afford at the moment, with the Premiership side also targeting a move for Will Lankshear.

It is understood that the Glasgow outfit will have to raise funds through player sales in order to help get a deal over the line.

Rangers could also face competition from the Premier League, with Football Insider previously reporting that Brentford and Wolves were also eyeing a move for Whittaker.

Plymouth have stood firm in their position regarding the forward, having turned down bids for the player last January as well.

The BBC claimed that Rangers made an offer during the previous transfer window, which was rejected by the second tier club as they looked to fight relegation to League One.

Rangers have until 30 August to find an agreement with Plymouth this summer before the market shuts for the remainder of the calendar year.

Morgan Whittaker key for Plymouth

Wayne Rooney will be hoping that Plymouth will be able to hold onto Whittaker beyond the summer window.

The forward’s goals were crucial to the team surviving their first year back in the Championship, with the club finishing 21st in the table.

Rooney has been appointed as manager over the summer, and will be looking to guide the Pilgrims to an improved position in the standings.

Plymouth’s first game of the new campaign will come against Sheffield Wednesday on 11 August at Hillsborough.

Whittaker situation will be nervy for Plymouth supporters

Plymouth supporters will be keen to see Whittaker remain with the club for another campaign given his importance to the side.

While £10 million is a sizable fee, there are no guarantees it will be reinvested back into improving the squad.

Multiple signings could be made with that kind of money, but it might not keep the side as competitive as it can be with Whittaker there.
