Plymouth Argyle are still looking for a new manager following the surprise departure of Miron Muslic, who took over at German club Schalke 04.

Argyle have opened their search for a replacement for Muslic as they prepare for their return to League One.

It had been hoped that they would be able to secure a quick transition, but negotiations could take time and no confirmation of who Muslic's replacement will be for next season has yet been confirmed.

Jack Wilshere is in the running for the vacant position

One name to have emerged as one of the favourites for the Plymouth job is that of former Arsenal academy coach Jack Wilshere.

Wilshere ended the 2024/25 season as the interim manager at Norwich City following their decision to sack Johannes Hoff Thorup with two games of their season left to play.

Come the end of the season, and with Wilshere's two matches in charge of the team having ended in a draw with Middlesbrough and a win against Cardiff City, Wilshere was reportedly told that he would not be considered for the manager's job at Carrow Road and left. Norwich have since appointed Liam Manning to the position.

The Sun has reported that Wilshere is now considered one of the "frontrunners" for the vacant Plymouth job and that he is set to have talks with them.

Close relationship to Argyle head of football could help Ian Evatt's chances

Journalist Alan Nixon reported last weekend that Ian Evatt is still in the running for the position, and that he could benefit from a close connection that he has to Home Park.

Figures from Transfermarkt

Nixon reported that Evatt "has a fighting chance of the Plymouth job" as a result of his connections to their newly-installed head of football operations, David Fox.

Fox made 142 appearances for the Greens between 2016 and 2019 and was appointed into this new position just last month. Fox and Evatt played together at Blackpool and Nixon describes their relationship as "close".

The club are angry at Muslic over the nature of his departure

Meanwhile, Argyle themselves are evidently extremely unhappy at the way that Muslic carried himself over his unexpected departure for Germany.

The club issued an angry statement, saying that they were "frustrated by this decision, having implemented clear structures, processes and personnel to aid Miron and his coaching staff", and that, "the club have also moved quickly to bring in new signings and received repeated verbal promises from Miron that he was committed to Argyle and would do everything to help the club bounce back to the second tier."

Muslic, meanwhile, was reported to have said his final goodbyes to Plymouth on Instagram. "It was short but intense, full of emotions,” Muslic posted. “Sometimes stories don’t finish how we all want and are not how they look, but I will stop here and close this page."

Plymouth supporters will be looking to put all this behind them and turn to a new chapter as soon as possible.
