Plymouth Argyle are close to sealing their latest summer signing
Plymouth Argyle are in advanced talks to sign Archie Mair following his exit from Norwich City.
According to Football Insider, the goalkeeper is closing in on a move to Home Park after departing the Canaries at the end of last season.
Mair spent the second half of last season on loan with Scottish side Motherwell, arriving in the January transfer window, but he featured just once in the Scottish Premiership.
The end of his contract with Norwich led to his exit, which has now opened the door for Plymouth to swoop in and attempt to sign the 24-year-old.
Plymouth are reportedly in pole position to seal the signing of Mair this summer as a free agent.
New manager Tom Cleverley is looking to bolster his side following his arrival as manager in June, with the club preparing for life back in League One.
Mair was unable to make a single appearance for Norwich during his six years with the club, having arrived from Aberdeen in 2019.
However, he spent time on loan with the likes of Motherwell, Morecambe, Gateshead and Notts County, among others, where he made 84 appearances in total.
It’s expected that Plymouth will seal Mair’s signature, as they look to build a team capable of earning promotion straight back to the Championship at the first attempt, although it's more likely he will play second fiddle to Conor Hazard if the Northern Irishman remains at Home Park.
Plymouth have already been active so far this summer, bringing in the likes of Bradley Ibrahim and Owen Oseni on a permanent basis.
Jack MacKenzie, Xavier Amaechi, Jamie Paterson and Caleb Watts have all also joined as free agents, with the latter being a controversial one from Devon rivals Exeter city.
That means if a deal is done, Mair could become their seventh addition of the current transfer window.
Mair was unable to prove himself at Norwich, spending most of his time at Carrow Road either out of the team or out on loan.
However, he could still prove a useful addition at Plymouth, as he is still only 24 and he can provide extra cover in goals for next season.
Given he’s a free agent, this is a move with little risk, so it shouldn’t impact any of their other business this summer.
While it’s unlikely he’ll feature much next season, he can provide competition to the likes of Conor Hazard and Zak Baker, and perhaps with time he’ll prove himself good enough to break into the side.
Cleverley does need to address other areas of his squad though, especially in the attacking department, with a replacement for Ryan Hardie still not secured yet - they have a month to go until the start of the 2025-26 season, and ideally, they'll have the Wrexham man's successor bedded in and starting by then.
